The best way to eat a steak

I am not usually a steak fan, but HyVee had bacon-wrapped sirloin on sale for crazy cheap last time we went grocery shopping, so we splurged.

We also aren’t crazy about wine – I think we both wish we liked wine, but just can’t bring ourselves to drink it. People give us wine as presents all the time, and it sits in our cabinets and collects dust unless we use it in cooking.

Tonight’s dinner was to die for, if I may say so myself. We made the steak, a butter, red wine and mushroom reduction sauce, cranberry sauce and cheesy mashed potatoes. Yum.

We used a leftover bottle of “2 buck Chuck”, which was ridiculously tasty, for this recipe. It’s also crazy cheap, so all in all we made one of the cheapest steak dinners ever.

This recipe was so good, I had to pass it on. Enjoy!

Traditional Mushroom Wine Sauce (click title for recipe source)
Great with any type of steak

4 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
1 cup dry red wine
Freshly ground pepper

Melt the butter in a pan. Add olive oil, garlic, and parsley. Sauté until the garlic is lightly browned. Add mushrooms and wine. Cook about five minutes, stirring frequently until mushrooms are soft. Add pepper to taste. Pour immediately over steak and serve.

Note: We cooked ours at a fast simmer/slow boil for 10 minutes. It was not only good on the steak but super on the mashed potatoes. Things I would look into next time – maybe a recipe that involved a bit of flour to thicken this a bit. It was tasty but a bit runny.

Also, we made this in the same pan as we had cooked the steak, which made an extra tasty sauce because it had steak and bacon fat drippings, and a bit of leftover butter, already in the pan.
